Importance of documenting your network.
Documenting your network is very important for the following reasons:
Less dependant on staff- It can be painful when the only person that really knew the network layout and information leaves the company.
Troubleshooting-Troubleshooting times and costs can be shaved when a problem is easier to diagnose because of the documentation.
Easier upgrades-Easier to upgrade if the information states what is in place now.
It is also very important to keep your diagram current. Keep your network blueprint of locations on the wall in terminal room. Keep your folder with all information since installation next to it. This should have server configurations, jack type, cable type, backbone pathways and sizes, etc.
